What is a mis-sold pension?
There are a variety of ways that pension mis-selling has become more common over last few years, often stemming from poor financial advice. A mis-sold pension can include any pension you were advised to invest in without being provided with all the necessary information or being informed of the potential risks, thus preventing you from making an informed decision. This can include if you were advised to transfer your workplace pension into a private plan or SIPP. This can cause you to lose benefits included with your work pension that you may have been unaware of. These benefits can have significant value to you in retirement.
If you are unsure if you have been the victim of pension mis selling, here are the most common factors that are associated with a mis-sold pension:
- Being encouraged to transfer your pension into a SIPP (Self Investment Personal Pension)
- Responding to an advert for a free pension review, cold called or approached at an event, and this led to you changing your pension
- The financial advisor failed to inform you of the all the risks associated with investing in a new pension scheme
- The financial advisor did not inform you of all the charges you may incur as a result of changing your pension or making a withdrawal from your pension
- The financial advisor does not inform you of their fees or commission they will receive
- Your attitude to risk was not properly considered
- Investment returns are “guaranteed” or to good to be true
- Persuaded to invest in an alternative/unusual investment offering high returns.
- You would have been better off with your existing pension plan
- Your IFA is no longer in business
